Primary objective Responsible for the management and leadership of the Zoology Unit to ensure that all zoological aspects of the Alice Springs Desert Park are developed and maintained in accordance with the functions and goals of the Park, as a leader in environmental and cultural tourism and education and a centre for arid zone conservation and research. Key duties and responsibilities 1. Assist the Curator Life Sciences in the planning and development of all zoological components of the Park, including genetic, demographic and behavioural management of the zoological collection, and ensure that they are integrated fully with the Parks interpretive plan and the other goals and functions of the Park. 2. Lead and manage the staff of the Zoology Unit. 3. Assist in the preparation and management the budget for the Zoology Unit. 4. As a member of the Parks Senior Management Team, contribute to the management, planning and development of the Park. Selection criteria Essential 1. High-level experience and knowledge of all aspects of the collection and display of Australian Fauna and its interpretation to the public. 2. Experience in managing a significant unit within a zoological institution including budget and project management. 3. Highly developed and proven ability to lead, motivate and manage zoological staff and to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. 4. Highly developed written and oral communication skills. 5. Comprehensive knowledge of the future directions of modern zoological institutions in Australia and internationally and in particular of bio-parks. 6. Highly developed abilities to plan and think and act strategically and to effectively implement work programs and to implement and manage change. 7. Comprehensive knowledge of the fauna of Australia, preferably of arid Australia. 8. A relevant zoological qualification or relevant experience in a field of technical work closely related to the duties of the vacancy. Desirable 1. Ability to undertake regular weekend work as Park Duty Officer and occasional field work. 2. High levels of understanding of and commitment to the objectives of the Alice Springs Desert Park and an ability to implement them.
