The Corporate Branch is responsible for delivering enabling services that support the effective and efficient operation of the agency and facilitates the agencys compliance with legislation, policies and guidelines as a non-corporate Commonwealth entity. The branch complements the scheme-focus of other agency divisions by providing digital services for internal and client-facing systems and facilitating strategic communications and client engagement through the agencys website and contact centre. In addition, the Branch supports efficient resource management and corporate accountability through functions such as financial management, performance reporting, parliamentary services, procurement, risk management and assurance, facilities management and human resource management.
About the SectionThe Strategic Communication section provides specialist communications, stakeholder engagement and education services to drive and deliver on agency outcomes. We manage external communications channels for the agency, including, social media and media liaison function. We are focussed on client experience and use a range of digital and traditional communication approaches.
Role Responsibilities and DutiesWe are seeking a proactive and passionate professional with media expertise to join our team as an Assistant Manager - Media. In this role, you will manage our small and busy media and audiovisual team, ensuring the delivery of high-quality content and effective media strategies. Under broad direction, the Assistant Manager - Media will:
- Lead a small team to deliver media, social media, audiovisual, and communication account management functions.
- Provide expert strategic media advice to CER management and executive, influencing decisions for optimal outcomes.
- Deliver timely and accurate media products, including enquiries, releases, talking points, Q&As, briefings and reactive statements.
- Oversee internal review and clearance processes for media products, working closely with the Manager - Strategic Communications, business areas and executive.
- Support the implementation of media strategies and draft op-eds under tight deadlines.
- Monitor media coverage and provide summaries, analysis, and media scans to internal stakeholders.
- Coordinate media engagement logistics, including interview briefs, liaising with media outlets, and arranging spokespeople.
- Contribute to the preparation of team reporting, dashboards and briefing packs.
- Oversee administrative tasks for the media team, including tracking requests, managing inboxes, and updating records.
- Maintain productive relationships with internal stakeholders and counterparts in other Australian Government agencies.
- Demonstrate ability Supervise and mentor APS staff, fostering their professional growth and development through effective coaching, training, and performance management.
The ideal candidate will have:
- Proficient experience in media, public affairs, journalism, or strategic communications, ideally within or closely connected to government.
- Proven ability to supervise the development of APS staff and demonstrated people management experience, with a focus on enhancing internal capability.
- Excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to produce high-quality content tailored to various audiences and channels.
- Collaborative and delivery-focused mindset with strong relationship and negotiation skills, and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- High attention to detail and sound judgement, particularly when handling sensitive or time-critical issues.
- Strong organisational skills with experience in supporting team processes and reporting requirements.
- Good understanding of government operations, media cycles, and stakeholder engagement.
- Qualifications in media, communications, journalism, marketing, public policy, or a relevant field are highly regarded.
