This is an Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander identified position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977. The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities. What Will You Do? In this role, you will be an integral and valued member of a highly skilled and high-performing Aboriginal Child and Family Advocacy and Support (ACFAS) team, which is part of the Care & Protection/Family Law Practice. Provide and coordinate a high level of complex paralegal support for solicitors and assist in the delivery of high-quality legal support services to Aboriginal clients. Each Day, You Can Expect To:
  • Liaising with solicitors and staff within the team to assist in the allocation of work and management of individual caseloads, including attending to tasks allocated via the email referral system.
  • Assist solicitors at Court in appropriate cases, including notetaking.
  • Obtain supporting documentation and draft documents required by solicitors for the preparation of hearings in accordance with minimum practice standards. Assist in gathering supporting documentation from and completing file reviews for non-litigation clients, as required.
  • Assist in researching matters of law or undertaking case reviews for solicitors, as required.
  • Assist in client interviews, and drafting of Applications, Affidavits, and other court documents, as and where required.
Who Are We Looking For? A highly skilled and motivated individual with a thorough understanding of the cultural, social, and historical needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. You will be able to demonstrate:
  • Must Identify as Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander to be considered for this position which is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977.
  • Formal paralegal qualifications, or currently undertaking a Law Degree.
  • Current NSW/ACT drivers license
  • In-depth knowledge of support and referral services available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients involved in the Care and Protection system.
  • Ability to prepare and deliver Community Legal Education.
  • Excellent research and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven experience with Microsoft Suite computer skills, and video-conferencing software.
