Rubicon Outdoor School is a specific purpose State Government Secondary School. Our school comprises two campuses: Thornton Campus is located in the Rubicon Valley approximately 100 km north-east of Melbourne, on the edge of the Great Dividing Range and the Nayook Campus, located near Neerim Junction at the foot of Mt Baw Baw, is approximately 100 km east of Melbourne in a bush setting. This position is based at our Nayook Campus.

Role

The Facilities and Grounds and Maintenance Manager role is to ensure the Schools environment and the physical infrastructure are proactively and systematically maintained and improved. They will do this in accordance with requirements outlined by the Principal, or delegate and the identified Authority within the Department of Education. Attendance is required from 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday to Friday during school term time. Additional attendance may be required during term break time for the fulfillment of required maintenance tasks and assisting contractors in attending to tasks.

Range 3 is distinguished by the introduction of management responsibility and accountability for the delivery of professional support services. The role will usually impact beyond the work area or professional field. It seeks to gain cooperation of other staff members or members of the school community to achieve specific objectives, such as in school administration, operations or educational programs.

Direction on targets and goals is provided but the position will have some degree of latitude in determining how they are achieved. This latitude will generally be limited by standard procedures and school policy. Deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.

The provision of business management responsibilities becomes a feature at range 3. Management of staff to achieve the expected outcomes is a key responsibility. Staff management issues will be resolved with minimal reference to senior management, although guidance will be required in more complex cases. Senior management will be provided with timely reports and advice, although this will generally be confined to matters relating to the immediate work area, service provision or educational program and is unlikely to impact substantially on whole of school operations.

This is the minimum range for positions that carry a mandatory qualification requirement of not less than four years. Professional student support positions become a feature at range 3 (e.g. therapists, psychologists) where standard professional services are delivered. Professional support and guidance will be close at hand and deviation from standard procedures and school policy will require guidance and direction from senior management.

An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee¿s position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain the inspections requirements on the identified Asset Information Management System (AIMS).
  • Carry out, organise or coordinate all mandated inspections and keep detailed record of compliance with inspections.
  • Assist the A/P (facilities) to ensure that the hazardous goods registry is maintained and updated for the maintenance area and that this information is incorporated in the whole school hazardous goods register in conjunction with the Laboratory Technician.
  • Induct contractors using the Contractor Management System prior to their commencing work. Ensure all OHS compliance requirements are met including certifications and insurance.
  • Issue and oversee any permits required by contractors.
  • Assist the Campus Principal in overseeing the work of contractors to ensure that they are working as described in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) or Safe Working Method Statement. (SWM) Ensure that all Safe Working Procedures are completed for all electrical equipment and machinery used by the maintenance department. Also ensure other employees who use the equipment are aware of the statements.
  • Assist school and visiting staff and contractors to comply with OH&S requirements
  • Participate in the OHS Committee.
  • Maintain grounds in accordance with compliance, the values and the educational direction of the school
  • Undertake both proactive and reactive maintenance of the schools infrastructure
  • Support the attendance of contractors and response to Essential maintenance items
  • Liaise and communicate regularly with the Campus Principal and subsequently school council
  • Undertake daily vehicle inspections and support the school in maintaining bus accreditation in accordance with Transport Victoria requirements as outlined by the Responsible Person, or delegate
