The Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation is a Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) appointed under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 (Vic.). We represent the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Traditional Owners of Melbourne and the Greater Melbourne region and take great pride in our responsibility for protecting and managing Aboriginal cultural heritage objects and places on Wurundjeri Country.

The Corporation provides a range of cultural services, including environmental land management, cross-cultural education, traditional Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremonies, research, and cultural consultations.

The Narrap Unit

The Narrap Unit is the dedicated Caring for Country unit of WWCHAC. The unit incorporates two distinct but connected programs - the Ranger Program and the Water Program - and centres itself on asserting and maintaining Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung cultural rights and responsibilities of protecting and caring for Country. The unit also creates opportunities for Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung and other First Nations people to have culturally meaningful, secure work that supports professional development and the continued management of country.

The Role – Narrap Ranger Crew Lead (Location: Healesville/Craigieburn)

The Ranger Program is focused on delivering Country restoration and management work - healing Country guides our program. Through our skilled and experienced team, the Ranger Program embeds Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country management principles and practices in Natural Resource Management (NRM). We work with an array of different clients including state government agencies and water corporations, LGAs, non-profits and the private sector. Importantly, our Ranger Program includes a path for First Nations people to develop careers in the environmental management.

The Role

The Crew Leader provides supervision and instruction to the Ranger teams and is responsible for OHS oversight and leadership in the delivery of on ground project objectives. The role leads and supports rangers and trainees to deliver on Country work to a high standard.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in leading, training and mentoring Narrap Ranger crew members, ensuring that all tasks are accomplished to the standard required, using appropriate natural resource management techniques, and that tools and equipment are utilised and maintained in the correct manner.
  • Ensure any incidents, accidents, breakdowns or damages are promptly and thoroughly reported to Ranger Program Operations Coordinator and/or OHS Officer.
  • Ensure all work carried out complies with Wurundjeri process and reflects best practice.
  • Ensure rangers and trainees are adhering to all OH&S processes and procedures relevant to their work.
  • Work as part of a team to lead the management of a range of environmental and natural resources, including:
    • Restoration and regeneration of landscapes, including planting and environmental weed control
    • Monitoring fauna and flora habitats ahead of land management activities
    • Track maintenance and fire track slashing and clearing
    • Works reporting
    • Fencing
    • Support delivery of the Narrap Unit Fire program
    • Assist in mentoring Narrap Ranger trainees.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders, state government departments and agencies to progress Wurundjeri Corporation objectives and represent the Corporation in meetings and events when requested.
  • Manage relationships and communication with clients and stakeholders, ensuring all projects are delivered effectively.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative working relationships with the Wurundjeri Elders, Wurundjeri staff and other stakeholders as required to perform your role.
  • Advocate for Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung rights and interests as Traditional Owners and act as a role model for the Wurundjeri Corporation in all that you do.
Skills, Qualifications and Experience
  • Minimum of 4 years' experience in Conservation or Land Management, preferably within Victoria
  • Previous experience working as a Team Leader or at a senior level
  • Minimum Certificate IV in Conservation and Land Management or similar level of experience in the industry
  • Chemcert or ACUP
  • Current Victorian Drivers Licence (and transportation) and ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicle
  • Construction OHS Induction card (White/Red Card)
  • Chainsaw Level 1. Operate and Maintain Chainsaws (desirable)
  • Ability to operate four-wheel drive vehicle
  • High-level communication, written and customer service skills
  • Able to identify indigenous and exotic flora species
  • Knowledge of best practice environmental standards for both workplace and residential settings
  • A high level of knowledge and experience in environmental and natural resource management techniques, including herbicide applications using knapsacks and high-volume rig equipment, hand weeding, woody weed removal, revegetation works, brush cutting and GPS mapping
  • Reasonable knowledge and appreciation of Aboriginal cultures and matters, including cultural safety and social issues
  • Comfortable to work in all weather conditions, depending on the tasks required
  • Comfortable with the demanding physical requirements of the role
