Macquarie University is hiring for a Lead Data Engineer for our Data Solutions team within Business Intelligence and Reporting. As a Lead Data Engineer, you will work with the relevant teams to lead the development and optimisation of data and analytics architecture, as well as optimising data flow and collection to deliver integrated and quality business information and reporting solutions.

Business Intelligence and Reporting is responsible for enabling evidence-based decision-making across the University.

Key Accountabilities

  • Adopt and enhance existing processes to design and implement data orchestration workflows, managing curated datasets through landing zones, enterprise data warehouses, and presentation layers for insight generation.

  • Collaborate with the lead modeller to translate requirements into production-ready outputs.

  • Partner with stakeholders to understand and support their data infrastructure needs, troubleshooting and resolving technical issues.

  • Deploy data models into production using CI/CD pipelines, ensuring seamless integration.

  • Develop and manage data acquisition pipelines, ingestion workflows, and data lake capabilities.

  • Work alongside relevant teams to deploy Machine Learning models for predictive analytics and advanced insights.

  • Leverage generative AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP) to implement end-to-end solutions, enabling stakeholders to derive deep insights from structured data collaborating with the Mcquarie AI Team.

  • Identify, design, and implement process improvements to automate workflows, optimise data delivery, and enhance infrastructure efficiency and scalability.

  • Create and maintain core documentation for data models, including DDLs, ETL mappings, data dictionaries, and change registers.

  • Support the implementation of data asset standards and governance processes to ensure data quality and compliance.

About You

  • Tertiary qualifications in Data Analytics, Data Science, Business, Statistics, or equivalent experience.

  • Proficient with database, data pipeline, and workflow management tools such as Snowflake, JIRA, Wiki, DBT, Apache Airflow, Python, Linux, and GitHub.

  • Advanced skills in designing, testing, and validating data transformation and ETL routines using tools like DBT, Apache Airflow, Python, and Alteryx.

  • Strong hands-on experience with Data Vault 2 and dimensional data model implementation.

  • Proven track record of providing technical leadership in the delivery of complex enterprise data or integration solutions.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Experience working in an agile squad environment is desirable.
