About the role

Koitoya Design/Make/Teach is seeking an experienced furniture maker to join their team in Fyshwick, ACT. This full-time position is an opportunity to showcase your expertise in crafting high-quality, custom furniture piecesusing skills and knowledge of solid timber.

We require a skilled furniture maker with diverse skills and experience of solid timber woodworking. Please see the key experience required below. As a key member of our skilled trades team, you will play a vital role in delivering outstanding results for our clients.

JOB TITLE: Cabinet maker/ Furniture maker

JOB TYPE: Full-time

LOCATION: 4/18 Maryborough Street, Fyshwick ACT 2609 Australia

SUPERVISOR/MANAGER: Hiroshi Yamaguchi/ Director

MAIN DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Making wooden furniture from drawings / 35 hours per week

  • Project management; schedule management, procedure building and material orders

  • Night Class teaching assistant: Every Wednesday night, 3 hours per week,for 32 weeks in a year.

What youll be doing

  • Interpreting design plans and specifications to create bespoke furniture pieces

  • Using a range of hand and power tools to shape, join and finish wood materials with adequate safety precautions

  • Undertaking all aspects of the furniture making process, from cutting and shaping to

  • assembling and finishing

  • Collaborating with the design team to translate concepts into functional, high quality,

  • furniture to customer satisfaction

  • Ensuring all work meets the highest standards of quality and safety

  • Maintaining a clean, organized workspace and workshop equipment

  • Assistant teacher in one of our night classes.

SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Qualifications:

  • More than 2 years of specialized education in solid wood-based furniture making or woodworking.

  • More than 2 years of specialized education in Japanese tools and woodworking skills and techniques.

Experience required:

• 1 year experience working in the fine furniture making industry

Skills required:

  • 2 years of specialized education / courses in solid wood furniture making.

  • 1-year professional experience in the fine furniture making industry

  • Professional experience with solid wood fine furniture making and solid timber joinery

  • Experience in Japanese joinery skills and techniques, in particular, hand cut dovetail joints and sliding dovetail joints.

  • Experience in using woodworking machinery such as panel saws, jointer, thicknesser, spindle molder, tenoner, mortiser, bandsaw, lathe.

  • Experience in installing cabinetry in bathrooms and kitchens and commercial fit outs.

  • Experience in small scale production.

  • Experience in using Japanese hand tools including Japanese chisels and planes

  • To be able to examine drawings, work orders and sample parts to determine specifications

  • To be able to select right timber, reading grains using good timber movement knowledge.

  • To be able to use CAD.

  • To be able to work from drawings and specifications to making cabinets and furniture with minimum supervision.

  • Good communication skills working with team.

Koitoya Design/Make/Teach is a small fine furniture designer, maker and woodwork school located in Fyshwick, Canberra. We have been designing and making top quality commissions based on solid wood. Our range of works are diverse, which includes, sculpture, craft production, commercial joinery and high end solid timber furniture. We also conduct a unique range of woodwork courses. We have total of 3 staff members. We work with locally resourced solid timbers to create unique works which are often inspired by Hiroshis heritage and Japanese joinery.
