The opportunityThe Australian Government has announced it will partner with the United States in its flagship Landsat Next Earth satellite program. Underpinned by new investment of $207.4m over the next 4 years, Australia will become the first country to join the Landsat 2030 International Partnerships Initiative.
Australias contributions to this partnership will be delivered by Geoscience Australia and will involve investment in new science to take full advantage of Landsat Nexts advanced capabilities, including an up to nine-fold increase in spatial resolution for key bands, more than twice the number of spectral bands, and increased frequency of data collection. Geoscience Australia will also deliver significant improvements to our satellite ground station in Alice Springs, our data processing and distribution, quality assurance and integrity monitoring, and Digital Earth and Digital Atlas capabilities.
Our teamThe Satellite Land Imaging Collection Branch (SLIC) will be at the forefront of Australias delivery of the Landsat Next partnership. A small but rapidly growing branch, SLIC comprises experts from a range of disciplines including data science, engineering, programmatics, Earth observations and remote sensing science, quality and technical assurance.
SLIC will deliver the enhanced satellite ground segment including an upgraded Alice Springs ground station, expanded satellite data processing and delivery architectures, new quality and integrity monitoring systems and science, supported by robust partner and stakeholder engagement, integrated systems engineering, governance, and program management.
The key duties of the position include:This role is for an experienced software engineer to contribute their expertise to the development and testing of an innovative Earth Observation data processing workflow. The workflow will be deployed on cloud infrastructure for on-going processing of large quantities of satellite imagery data. The role will report to the Assistant Director, Satellite Data Processing Systems within the Satellite Land Imaging Collection Branch.
In this role you will:
- Work with counterparts within GA and the USGS to develop, test, and maintain data processing workflows to enable large scale Earth observation data processing on cloud infrastructure.
- Communicate and coordinate activities and technical status with the Systems Engineers, Software Engineers, and other Project team members, as appropriate.
- Submit, analyze, and manage configuration change requests in accordance with established Configuration Management (CM) processes.
- Perform code development for assigned tasks; develop and conduct unit testing.
- Provide technical leadership, including expert code review via timely verbal and written feedback to other team members.
Required skills, knowledge, experience and/or qualifications
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Knowledge of software engineering methodology
- 4+ years experience with C/C++
- 2+ years experience with Python
- Strong DevOps experience with GitHub and Gitlab CI/CD pipelines and automation
- Relational database experience (Postgres)
- Unix/Linux experience
- Experience with change management tools such as Git, GitHub, or GitLab
- Experience with Kubernetes and software containerization
- Perl
- Bash and Tcsh
- Java
- Angular
- GUI Development
- Experience working with satellite image data, knowledge of remote sensing principles, standard image correction and calibration approaches
- Experience with AWS Cloud Service especially S3, EC2, ECR, and Lambda
- Understanding of AWS security, networking, and best practices
- Be an Australian Citizen at the closing date of application.
- The successful applicant must be able to obtain, hold and maintain a security clearance of an appropriate level relevant to this role.
