Who we are The Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) is part of the Commonwealth Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water. As primary agency for Australias Antarctic Program (AAP), the AAD is responsible for achieving the Australian Governments Antarctic goals. These goals are to:
  • maintain the Antarctic Treaty System and enhance Australias influence within it,
  • protect the Antarctic environment
  • understand the role of Antarctica in the global climate system,
  • undertake scientific work of practical, economic and national significance.
The AAD also has responsibility for administering the Australian Antarctic Territory and the Territory of Heard Island and McDonald Islands. The AAD Science Branch leads, conducts and supports a world class program of scientific research and environmental management, consistent with national priorities through the Australian Antarctic Science Decadal Strategy. The responsibilities of the Science Branch are diverse as we lead the Australian Governments scientific program in Antarctica. The branch provides research and advice to support Australias Antarctic policy objectives, including participation in the Antarctic Treaty system and other international committees, commissions and intergovernmental panels. It manages and administers the Australian Antarctic Science Program and provides scientific and research advice to support regulatory and management decisions. Our research addresses critical issues including climate change, human impacts in Antarctica, and the conservation of Antarctic and Southern Ocean biodiversity. The branch also provides advice for Antarctic capability projects, conducts impact assessments and develops and implements strategies to address environmental legacies while undertaking targeted outreach promoting the value of Australian Antarctic science. The Environmental Stewardship Program (ESP), within the Science Branch, is a multidisciplinary program that conducts scientific research and implements evidence-based conservation, environmental management, environmental assessments, remediation and mitigation actions in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic. The job The Environmental Manager is central to driving practical and best practice environmental protection through all Australian Government activities in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic. Reporting to the Program Leader of the AADs Environmental Stewardship Program, the Environmental Manager provides leadership and strategic environmental management advice to the AAD, initiating and leading collaborative engagement across all AAD branches, regulators, and internal and external stakeholders to ensure high quality environmental outcomes and environmental improvements throughout the Australian Antarctic Program (AAP). They will oversee a team of staff conducting office and field activities in Kingston, Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic. Duties, tasks and responsibilities: Under broad direction with significant degree of independence:
  • Elevate and continually promote excellence in environmental protection, including the AADs commitment to best practice environmental stewardship throughout the Australian Antarctic Program.
  • Through a whole-of-AAD approach, oversee and coordinate the delivery and implementation of a full range of environmental management strategies and plans, complex environmental impact assessments, operational environmental performance and monitoring, and environmental audits and assurance reporting.
  • Lead environmental education, training and awareness for AAD staff and AAP expeditioners, embedding a culture across the AAP that is committed to environmental protection and stewardship founded on: an understanding of the unique environmental values of the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic, obligations and expectations, compliance with regulations and policy, and continual improvement.
  • Strategically commission / facilitate scientific research and engage with research partners to deliver science in support of the breadth of the AADs environmental management needs (examples include: biosecurity/invasive species monitoring, data derived for station management and “town planning”, net-zero commitments etc).
  • Oversee implementing and maintaining the AADs environmental management system.
Provide leadership and advice to and during environmental incidents including: response and recovery, remediation, monitoring, reporting and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Engage strategically to develop and maintain effective and trusted relationships with a diverse group of collaborative partners and stakeholders throughout the AAD and DCCEEW, and with domestic and international partners to deliver on environmental stewardship priorities. This includes representing the AAD in the consultation with regulators, with a particular focus on Commonwealth and State legislation and Australias Antarctic Treaty obligations, and at national professional and public forums.
  • Manage the AADs Environmental Management Unit, including managing resources, supervision of staff, recruitment, performance management, conflict resolution and the identification of the training needs of employees.
  • Lead and actively promote a positive workplace culture at the AAD, with a commitment to collaboration, inclusion, safety, compliance and continuous improvement.

  • Demonstrated active awareness of contemporary and evolving developments in environmental management, including relevant legislation and regulation, and specialist literature/journals.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills with proven ability to communicate effectively with influence (flexible, relevant, context based), including:
    • a high level of experience engaging with subject matter experts (operational, policy and scientific) to negotiate and deliver positive environmental outcomes,
    • a collaborative mindset with an ability to establish and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders and collaborators, and to effectively represent the Program, Science Branch, the AAD and DCCEEW,
    • Preparing and leading education/training to wide audiences (e.g. for expeditioner briefings).
  • Demonstrated skill in anticipating, identifying and assessing environmental risks and identifying options for appropriate risk management and mitigation.
  • Ability to oversee and contribute to the production of scientific, technical and non-technical reports, policies, guidelines, briefs and other documentation, and presenting outcomes to senior stakeholders, and at national and international meetings.
  • Demonstrated ability to observe, adjust and learn in order to contribute to a positive and inclusive team culture, and a safe and equitable workplace.
Please note that the successful applicant may be required to travel to the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic regions therefore they may be required to meet specific medical, adaptability and personal qualities requirements appropriate to working in those environments. In order to undertake travel to the Antarctic & sub-Antarctic regions they will need to:
  • demonstrate the range of personal qualities and interpersonal skills necessary to perform as a successful team member within isolated Antarctic and sub-Antarctic environments,
  • demonstrate an ability to effectively adapt and respond to the demands of living and working in an isolated and confined environment as determined by a psychological (adaptability) assessment,
  • be certified as fit for Antarctic service by the AADs Polar Medicine Unit.
Eligibility and other requirements Mandatory qualifications
  • A relevant tertiary qualification from an Australian tertiary institution, or a comparable overseas institution, or demonstrated equivalent relevant experience (e.g. a minimum of 7 years in a relevant environmental management role).
Citizenship - to be eligible for employment with the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water you must be an Australian citizen. Security Clearance - this position requires a Negative Vetting Level 1 security clearance. You will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
