Who we are The Risk, Intelligence and Strategy Branch is responsible for supporting and enhancing strategic decision-making through intelligence analysis, risk modelling and analysis, governance practices and modern biosecurity legislation. This branch is responsible for supporting the Biosecurity and Compliance Group to identify the next horizon of risks, threats and disruptions. It is also developing frameworks to enable strategic thinking to be embedded within line areas. The Biosecurity System Modelling Section works at the interface of analytics, modelling, and biosecurity policy. We develop solutions to model how biosecurity in Australia is performing at a whole-of-system level. We collaborate broadly, both with internal policy areas and external experts in biosecurity modelling. The Job The Assistant Director role provides specialist modelling and analytic insights to decision-makers in biosecurity policy, by leading ongoing technical development and delivery of biosecurity risk advice, particularly focussed at the whole-of-system level. Under limited supervision, the Assistant Director is expected to:
  • Lead a team to collaboratively apply, maintain and develop a quantitative model of system-level biosecurity risk and/or related models using R and/or Python.
  • Deliver timely, transparent and scientifically sound biosecurity risk insights to inform decision making.
  • Provide quality and integrity assurance of team data-processing, statistical and modelling approaches and the biosecurity risk insights they produce.
  • Apply and improve good practices in data collection, quality control and documentation, including a focus on transparency, testing and version control.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of strategies to broaden the scope of team modelling capability and its value proposition.
  • Manage and contribute to engagement with policy and technical areas, senior decision-makers and other internal and external stakeholders to understand end-user priorities, communicate insights and/or harness subject matter expertise.
  • Lead, facilitate and/or contribute to collaborative modelling projects with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Produce written and verbal descriptions of modelling analyses, including appropriate interpretation of the results, assumptions and limitations.
  • Contribute to team development and supervise staff as required.

  • Knowledge of approaches in analysis and modelling (familiarity with modelling risk via probabilistic and/or simulation approaches is desirable).
  • Experience dealing with incomplete and uncertain datasets.
  • Experience in business analysis, communication or stakeholder engagement is desirable.
  • Familiarity with Australias biosecurity system is desirable.
  • An interest in working at the interface of modelling and policy.
Mandatory qualifications A tertiary level qualification in applied mathematics/statistics, economics, computer science, life science, or equivalent experience.
