Freedom of Information and Privacy Officer

  • Salary: $95,102 - $107,905 (Plus Superannuation)
  • Ongoing role
  • Usual hours of work: Full time (flexibility may be available)

The Role

Reporting to the Manager, Freedom of Information & Privacy, this position is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Vic) (the FOI Act) and the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) (the Privacy Act). The role sits within the Public and Administrative Law Unit within the Legal and Legislation Branch.

The responsibilities of the Freedom of Information and Privacy Officer will include:

  • Support departmental compliance with the FOI Act and Privacy Act by providing expert advice and support to staff in relation to complex FOI and privacy matters, including the handling of sensitive information.
  • Maintain a thorough understanding of relevant legislation and the application of the FOI Act and Privacy Act.
  • Draft procedural correspondence, recommendations and high-quality decisions in relation to applications made under the FOI Act, ensuring internal consistency with previous decisions made.

The Team

The position of Freedom of Information and Privacy Officer forms a part of the Legal and Legislation branch within the Corporate Services group.

The Corporate Services Group actively supports Ministers and the Departments portfolio groups to create the conditions for sustainable economic development and employment growth. The Legal and Legislation Branch is the centralised provider of legal services to the Department. It supports the Departments strategic priorities by partnering with our client areas and delivering quality legal advice, dispute management, legislation development and commercial legal services.

About You

The successful candidate should ideally have the following skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of the FOI Act and Privacy Act or experience and technical expertise in governance, compliance or administrative law.
  • High-level organisational, planning and prioritisation skills with the ability to manage competing deadlines.
  • Well-developed verbal and written communication skills (including an eye for detail), with an ability to present, advocate and negotiate on complex issues with internal and external stakeholders of differing backgrounds and expertise.
