Role Details

The Department of Child Protection is seeking a Youth Engagement Officer to join on a full-time term basis.

The role is responsible for:

  • Establishing and maintaining a Residential Care Young Persons Group with the aim of improving the experience of living in Residential Care through active consultation, the encouragement of participation and empowerment.
  • Providing professional recommendations and support to staff on how to effectively communicate with young people whilst ensuring that their voice, views, and opinions are reflected in influencing policy and decision making.
  • Developing, implementing, and evaluating culturally responsive and culturally safe programs and activities that are relevant, appropriate and accessible to Aboriginal children and young people.
  • Working with children and young people to empower them to access opportunities that will enable them to interact with the services and systems required.

About You

We are looking for a passionate individual with experience in developing a range of programs whilst providing expertise on a wide range of residential care practices to meet young peoples needs.

The ability to analyse complex situations and problems and make professional recommendations for the creation of long-term solutions is highly desirable.

To be successful in this role, you will have the ability to initiate and identify progressive ways to keep young people positively engaged and to conflict resolute during interactions with young people.

You will also demonstrate the ability to apply culturally sensitive child protection practice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, and community from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

Special Conditions

Essential Qualifications:

AHP: A degree level qualification in Social Work which gives eligibility for full membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers.

PO: Appropriate degree qualification in Community Services, Social Sciences, Human Services, Health or related field.

Persons of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent, who have the appropriate background and skills but do not have the essential qualification, may apply for and be engaged/assigned to the role of Social Worker and will be entitled to apply for any Allied Health Professional roles requiring a qualification in Social Work within the Department for Child Protection (DCP).
