About the Role We are seeking a Materials Characterisation Technician to provide technical support within the Microscopy & Advanced Analytical Facility (MAAF) and High Temperature Laboratories (HTP). This role supports students, academics, and researchers within the School of Engineering (SoE) and the School of Science, Computing and Engineering Technologies (SoSCET). The successful candidate will have strong laboratory skills, a hands-on approach to lab management, and experience working with interdisciplinary teams. They will ensure safe lab operations by providing occupational health and safety (OH&S) guidance and maintaining laboratory spaces, facilities and instruments. This role requires collaboration with technical staff, academics, and researchers while maintaining excellent customer service and providing technical support. The Materials Characterisation Technician will report to the Laboratory Manager - Engineering Support. A background in materials science, chemistry, applied physics, or a related field is essential, along with experience in materials characterisation techniques and sample preparation. Knowledge of optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy, surface profilometry, microhardness testing, metallography (sectioning, mounting, polishing), high-temperature furnaces, DSC-TGA, XRD, XRF, or electrochemistry is highly desirable. About You To be suitable for this role you will need to have experience in the below key accountabilities:

  • Proven experience operating instrumentation and techniques for material characterization
  • Ability to provide technical support for materials characterisation
  • Experience in operating high temperature furnaces
  • Ability to maintain safe laboratory operation environments
  • Proficiency in data analysis and presentation
  • Experience with laboratory upkeep
