About the opportunity:

At Uniting, we know that families experiencing adversity often need more than practical support—they need someone who believes in their capacity for change. Through the Newpin (New Parent and Infant Network) program, we work intensively alongside parents to strengthen relationships, build confidence and support children to remain safely with their families or return home from out-of-home care.

We're looking for an experienced and compassionate Newpin Family Worker to join our dedicated team. This is a unique and highly rewarding role for someone passionate about therapeutic family work, attachment-based practice and helping families create lasting change.

As a Newpin Family Worker, you will walk alongside parents during some of the most challenging times in their lives. Using a trauma-informed and relationship-based approach, you'll support families to develop safer, stronger and more nurturing connections with their children.

This isn't traditional case management.

You'll provide intensive therapeutic support, facilitate group programs, support family visits, and work collaboratively with parents to build skills, confidence and hope. Every day brings opportunities to witness resilience, celebrate progress and make a genuine difference in the lives of children and families.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Deliver therapeutic interventions for parents and children using attachment, developmental and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Facilitate parenting education, psycho-educational and therapeutic support groups.
  • Support supervised family time and help parents strengthen their relationships with their children.
  • Complete assessments, develop family goals and partner with parents to create meaningful family plans.
  • Provide advocacy, referrals and minor case management support tailored to changing family needs.
  • Participate in care team meetings and collaborate with Child Protection and other services.
  • Use strengths-based practice to support restoration and family preservation outcomes.
  • Maintain high-quality documentation and contribute to a supportive, multidisciplinary team environment.

Your Qualifications & Experience

  • A degree qualification in Social Work, Psychology, Counselling, Community Service or a related discipline.
  • At least 3 years experience supporting vulnerable children and families.
  • Experience facilitating therapeutic groups, parenting programs or psycho-educational programs.
  • Knowledge of attachment theory, developmental theory and trauma-informed practice and how these inform your work with families.
  • Experience working with families in crisis using culturally responsive, strengths-based approaches.
  • Strong assessment, communication and relationship-building skills.
  • The ability to remain calm, flexible and compassionate while navigating complexity.
  • A current driver’s licence with a good driving history and current ACT WWVP check.

Benefits and culture

Working to inspire people, enliven communities and confront injustice brings its own rewards, but there’s more.

  • Welcoming you exactly as you are
  • Access to generous NFP salary packaging options
  • Wellbeing programs as well as access to Uniting’s URewards retail partner program.
  • Career development opportunities such as training, education.
  • Amazing workplace culture
