The DVA Security Section is responsible for managing the department’s protective security through a combination of procedural, physical, personnel, and information security measures designed to protect people, information and assets from security threats. The security team provides advice and expertise to the Chief Security Officer to apply the five principles, four outcomes and the core requirements of the 16 policies of the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF), using a security risk managed approach that best suits the department’s security goals and objectives.

DVA is seeking a highly motivated, experienced and innovative professional to help manage personnel security. Supervising a small team of security officers, the Assistant Director – Personnel Security will be responsible for ensuring the department is meeting its obligations under the PSPF. The role will include driving a significant body of work associated with the continuous improvement of the department’s personnel security capability in addition to overseeing the daily personnel security operations of the team.


Duties
  • Manage a small team of personnel security officers, ensuring compliance with the PSPF, department policies and procedures
  • Undertake a review of DVA’s personnel security policies and procedures, to strengthen the department’s personnel security environment
  • Liaise with the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA) and undertake high level strategic engagement with other external stakeholders
  • Build team capability through coaching, feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within the work unit
  • Manage personnel security escalations and complex Security Clearance cases
  • Lead and coordinate strategic planning for short and longer-term personnel security project initiatives
Eligibility

  • Under section 22(8) of the Public Service Act 1999, employees must be Australian citizens to be employed in the Australian Public Service (APS).
  • All applicants external to DVA offered employment will be required to successfully undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.
Mandatory Requirements
  • Formal Qualifications and/or experience in government Personnel Security
  • Formal Qualifications in government security and/or risk
  • NV1 Security Clearance (or the ability to obtain one).

Where a non-ongoing position is offered, the role will be filled for an initial specified term of up to18 months.
