Murray Irrigation Limited (MIL) is searching for an experienced General Manager Corporate Services who is open to relocating to the beautiful regional town of Deniliquin and be responsible for oversight and management of corporate functions that support the overall business operations. This role is a member of the Executive Leadership Team and provides strategic advice and operational direction, ensuring the efficient running of the business.

MIL is the largest private irrigation water delivery company in Australia, formed as an unlisted public company in March 1995 when the NSW Government privatised its Murray irrigation area and districts. The companys irrigators are also shareholders and include 2,100 landholdings across 724,000 hectares in the Southern Riverina.

MIL is located in southern NSW and uses approximately 2,755km of gravity-fed earthen channels to deliver a five-year average of 515GL to their landholders, through efficient management of their NSW Murray Regulated River Water Access Licences (WALs). Head office is in Deniliquin with branch offices in Finley and Wakool. Farm businesses in the area predominately include rice, cereals, wheat, canola, annual pasture, dairy, wool, beef and lamb, with an average gross value agriculture production of $500 million.

The Role

This key leadership role reports to the Chief Executive Officer and is a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT). MILs head office is based in Deniliquin, NSW where the team and key stakeholders are based or accessible. MIL is the largest employer in the region with 120 employees. The successful candidate will ideally reside or be willing to relocate and live in the local area/MIL footprint in a full-time capacity and be conscious of the requirements of holding an executive leadership position in the region. Corporate functions you will lead include; corporate governance, legal services, compliance, risk management and internal audit, human resources, workplace health and safety, procurement and information technology.

Skills & Experience

The ideal candidate will be commercially astute with proven corporate/private enterprise experience in agribusiness (the water industry will be an advantage), as well as people management (with focus on building talent), compliance and risk. With a challenging political environment (including changes to legislation), Board and shareholder advocacy in addition to weather and climate change (including drought), this role will be both challenging and rewarding and requires a strong and resilient leader with an exemplary degree of professionalism.

To be successful in this role, you will have the following experience and attributes:

  • Tertiary qualification in business administration, law, management, finance, human resources or an appropriate discipline or equivalent formal studies.

  • Proven ability to lead diverse teams and build talent.

  • Understanding of legal and regulatory requirements relevant to corporate services.

  • Experience in risk management and ensuring compliance.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills coupled with an acute sense of commercial reality.

  • Strong public speaking skills with the ability to communicate and engage with a wide range of stakeholders e.g. engaged shareholders, service providers, employees etc.

  • Skilled in technology and systems implementation to improve business operations.

  • Governance and/or compliance knowledge and/or qualifications will be looked upon favourably.

  • Solid communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritise, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Excellent attention to detail with exceptional organisational skills and capabilities in terms of prioritising work and meeting deadlines.

  • High-level problem-solving abilities to address complex challenges.

  • Well-developed people skills i.e., emotional intelligence, optimism, courage, humility, patience along with negotiation and influencing skills.

  • Flexible with strategic and analytical thinking skills.

  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to remain calm under pressure and have a good sense of humour.

  • Technologically savvy with advanced skills in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
