We are seeking applicants who are passionate about pursuing General and Acute Care Medicine Advanced Training for 2027.
Hospital Overview
The Royal Hobart Hospital (RHH) is the largest hospital in Tasmania with approximately 500 beds and serves as the state‑wide referral centre for numerous tertiary services. It is an accredited Level 3 teaching hospital and the community hospital for the Greater Hobart Region.
Department Overview
The Department of General and Acute Care Medicine is the largest inpatient medical unit at the RHH, averaging 60‑90 inpatients and admitting approximately 15 to 20 patients per day across five Acute Medical teams, including a Rapid Assessment Medical Unit (RAMU) and an Emergency Medicine Department unit.
Training Program
The RHH offers an advanced training program with exposure to the following rotations:
- Core General Medicine
- Core General Medicine related – RAMU, General Medicine ED team
- Major medical sub‑specialties with 6‑month terms
- Respiratory
- Nephrology
- Stroke/Neurology
- Cardiology
- Gastroenterology
The Advanced Training program provides 12 months of core training in General Medicine and 6‑12 months of core sub‑specialty terms. It is accredited for 24 months of core and 12 months of non‑core training. Trainees are offered a 1‑year contract initially with the potential to extend to 2‑3 years.
Application Timeline

Second round offers: Friday 25th September 2026.
Salary and Classification
Salary: $134,930 – $189,005 per annum (in accordance with the Medical Practitioners Agreement 2022).
Classification: Medical Practitioner Level 5‑11 (Registrar/Senior Registrar).
Award: Medical Practitioners (Tasmanian State Service) Award.
Period of Employment
Fixed term, full‑time day work, 76 hours per fortnight (+10 hours protected training time per fortnight, pro rata), commencing 1 February 2027 until 7 February 2028. (Potential to extend appointment to 2‑3 years may be negotiated for suitable applicants).

Duties
The Advanced Trainee is responsible for the day‑to‑day management of private and public inpatients and outpatients within the hospital, provides after‑hours emergency cover, and participates in outpatient clinics.
Essential Requirements
- General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Current Tasmanian Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).
Highly Desirable
- Completion of the RACP Basic Physician Training Program.
