Queensland’s fisheries are among the most diverse and valuable in Australia, supporting regional economies, providing world‑class seafood, and underpinning environmental and community wellbeing.

The Department of Primary Industries (DPI) plays a central role in managing these shared natural resources sustainably. As Executive Director, Fisheries, you will lead a division at the heart of this mission – driving stability, renewal and trust across one of the State’s most complex and high‑profile portfolios. This is a pivotal leadership opportunity for an experienced executive ready to bring vision, integrity and collaboration to a sector balancing economic, environmental and social outcomes.

About the Department of Primary Industries

For over a century, DPI has been dedicated to advancing Queensland’s food security, agricultural innovation and sustainable resource use. From land to sea, the department works to ensure that Queensland’s industries and environments thrive for generations to come.

DPI is home to a diverse workforce united by purpose and values – integrity, partnership, inclusion and service. Joining this department means joining a team committed to impact, delivering prosperity for Queenslanders while caring for the resources that sustain us.

About the Role

Reporting to the Deputy Director‑General, you will lead the Fisheries Division, encompassing policy, operations, compliance and reform, through a critical phase of renewal and transformation.

  • Provide authoritative advice to the DG, DDG and Minister on fisheries sustainability, growth and reform.
  • Drive delivery of the Fishing & Seafood Action Plan, aligning outcomes with Prosper 2050 and the Queensland Sustainable Fisheries Strategy 2017–2027.
  • Strengthen governance, regulatory performance and transparent reporting across a large and operationally complex division.
  • Lead change and culture renewal, building capability, trust and engagement across a workforce of around 240 staff.
  • Build partnerships with industry, community and government to deliver balanced, sustainable outcomes that protect Queensland’s fisheries legacy.
  • Represent Queensland in regional, national and international forums, ensuring the State’s leadership and voice are recognised.
About You

You are a dedicated and seasoned executive or industry leader known for credibility, composure and impact in complex policy, regulatory or operational environments.

You bring:

  • Proven success leading multidisciplinary teams through reform, uncertainty and change.
  • Strong understanding of natural resource governance, compliance and stakeholder engagement.
  • Political and strategic acumen, with the ability to influence across Cabinet, industry and community.
  • Integrity, resilience and the ability to drive trust, performance and collaboration.
  • A tertiary qualification in fisheries, natural resource management, agriculture, science, economics or public policy (or equivalent experience) is highly desirable.

As a senior leader in the Queensland public sector you will embody the Leadership Competencies for Queensland, providing clear vision, delivering through others, and modelling accountability, inclusion and respect in every decision.

Why Join Us?

This is a defining opportunity to shape the future of Queensland’s fisheries, strengthening governance, rebuilding trust and leading sustainable industry growth.

You’ll join a department committed to innovation, collaboration and stewardship, where leaders are empowered to make a difference that matters for Queensland, its communities and the environment.

This role offers a salary band of SES 2 High.
