Primary objective The Special Education Support Officer provides assistance to students of Centralian Middle School, in particular those students with multiple needs, as directed by staff in the classroom and leadership team. Context statement Centralian Middle School is a government middle school in Alice Springs. It has a multicultural enrolment of around 350 students, including approximately 65% Indigenous students. The school operates a range of programs to support students with disability and/or who are at risk of disengaging from school. School Wide Positive Behaviour and the MS Instructional Model are important foundations of teaching and learning. Key duties and responsibilities 1. Assist teacher to implement individual educational programs to support student learning needs. 2. Contribute to programming, recording and collection of data for report preparation to assist with effective communication and processing of information. 3. Play an integral role in supervising students in both one-to-one and group instruction, including involvement in yard duty and community based programs, to help achieve an effective learning environment and for the wellbeing of students. 4. Prepare and maintain teaching resources and aids to ensure relevant materials available to support teaching. 5. Assist with personal hygiene and first aid as necessary to assist with the well-being of students. Selection criteria Essential 1. Demonstrated ability to implement individual programs to support students with special needs including intellectual functioning and challenging behaviours. 2. Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality while working in sensitive situations with limited supervision, using initiative and flexible team skills. 3. Demonstrated ability to support teachers and effectively communicate with students, staff, parents, Student Services specialists and community based support organisations in a cross-cultural environment. 4. Demonstrated knowledge of administrative skills and the ability to prepare classroom materials and aids. 5. A current ‘Working with Children Clearance Notice and First Aid certificate or the capacity to obtain in a timely manner.
